Amritsar-Kolkata Industrial Corridor (AKIC): Opportunities for UP Businesses
30 March 2026 · Team
The Amritsar-Kolkata Industrial Corridor (AKIC), built along the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC), doesn’t get as much attention as DMIC — but for Uttar Pradesh, it’s arguably more significant. UP holds about 57% of the entire AKIC catchment area, spread across 17 districts, with an expected investment of more than Rs 50,000 crore. That’s the largest share of any state along the corridor, by a wide margin.
Why UP dominates this corridor
Geography is the simple answer — a large stretch of the EDFC runs through UP, and the government has planned industrial development along nearly the entire length of it. For a business owner, this means the AKIC isn’t concentrated in one or two districts the way some other schemes are; it’s spread across a broad swathe of the state, which gives you more choice in where to locate depending on your existing supply chain and workforce access.
Where the clusters are planned
Along the AKIC-EDFC stretch in UP, the plan involves 3 integrated manufacturing clusters built around 18 identified railway stations. The clusters are grouped roughly into three regions:
- Auraiya/Kannauj-Kanpur — an established industrial belt with existing manufacturing strength.
- Prayagraj-Varanasi — a corridor connecting two of eastern UP’s major economic centres.
- Agra-Aligarh — western UP, with proximity to both Delhi-NCR and other corridor infrastructure.
If your business already has ties to one of these regions — suppliers, labour, or customers — an AKIC-linked plot in that cluster can mean better freight connectivity without uprooting your existing operations.
What “railway station-anchored” means for you
Manufacturing clusters built around specific railway stations are designed to give industrial units efficient rail access for freight — useful if you move bulk raw materials or heavy finished goods, and less relevant if your business is small-parcel or road-freight dependent. It’s worth thinking honestly about whether your logistics profile actually benefits from rail proximity before prioritising an AKIC location over other options.
Next steps
Because AKIC development spans so many districts and multiple clusters, “AKIC land” isn’t a single product — availability, pricing, and readiness differ cluster by cluster and even station by station. We help clients narrow this down to the specific sites that actually fit their sector and logistics needs.
