How to Change Your Registered Business Name as an MSME in UP

2 February 2026 · Team

Businesses change names more often than people expect — a rebrand, a change in ownership or partnership structure, a correction to how the name was originally entered at registration. Whatever the reason, if your MSME unit is registered in Uttar Pradesh, you can’t just start using a new name on your invoices and letterheads and expect everything else to fall in line. There’s a formal process to update it, and skipping it tends to cause problems later.

Why this needs to be done formally

Your registered business name is the anchor for a lot of other records — Udyam registration, GST, bank accounts, any state scheme approvals or subsidies you’ve received, and land or lease documents tied to your unit. If these fall out of sync with each other, it can slow down or block things like loan renewals, subsidy disbursement, or even routine compliance filings, because different departments are seeing different names for what should be the same entity.

The government order behind the process

Uttar Pradesh has a defined administrative process, backed by a specific government order, that lets MSME units formally update or change their registered business name. This exists precisely because name changes are common enough — due to rebranding, ownership changes, or correcting registration errors — that the state has built a standard route for it rather than leaving units to navigate it ad hoc.

What you’ll typically need to show

Expect to provide documentation establishing the reason for the change — for example, a board resolution or partnership deed amendment for an ownership-driven change, or supporting proof if you’re correcting an error from the original registration. You’ll also want to be ready to update downstream records once the change is approved, rather than treating the name change application as the finish line.

Keep your other registrations in step

Once your business name change is approved, don’t let the update stop there. Your Udyam registration, GST registration, IEC (if you export), and any active scheme approvals should all be updated to match. This is one of the more common places we see MSMEs run into avoidable friction — a name change done in one place but not reflected everywhere else.
